Information about the Scholarships
What is the Rhodes Scholarship?

The Rhodes Scholarship is a postgraduate award for study at the University of Oxford. Rhodes Scholars may study any full-time postgraduate course offered by the University, whether a taught Master’s programme or a research degree; or a second undergraduate degree (senior status), over two years.
Please note that Scholars may ONLY study for the MFE (Masters in Financial Economics) or the MBA in the second year of their Scholarship.

The Scholarship is for two years in the first instance, though may be held for one year only; applications for a third year of Scholarship (for those pursuing the DPhil) are considered during the course of the 2nd year. University and College fees are paid by the Rhodes Trust.

In addition, Scholars receive a monthly maintenance stipend to cover accommodation and living expenses. Currently the maintenance stipend is set at £958 per month. To browse the University of Oxford prospectus on-line: www.ox.ac.uk (link opens site in new browser window).

Who can apply for the Rhodes Scholarship?

Rhodes Scholars are selected from the following countries: Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Commonwealth Caribbean, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and neighbours (Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland), USA, Zambia, Zimbabwe. Cecil Rhodes directed that the selection of scholars should be based on academic ability; sporting activity; qualities of personal rectitude, strength and compassion; and sense of the public good. The Trust continues to respect the spirit of these definitions, as identified within our contemporary context. Thus, while the Trustees believe that high academic attainment is a prerequisite, they also believe in the necessity of attainment in the area broadly defined by the terms of the Will. The Rhodes Trust and Oxford University require that selection for a Scholarship and for admission to the University will be 'without regard to marital status, race, ethnic origin, colour, religion, sexual orientation, social background, or disability'. The Scholarship is a postgraduate award. Therefore applicants must have completed their first degree to a very high standard by the time of arrival in Oxford. Exact terms of eligibility (age limit, residency etc.) vary according to country. For detailed eligibility criteria and how to apply, follow the country links here. Please note that anyone thinking of applying for a Rhodes Scholarship should also read carefully the prospectus of the University of Oxford: www.ox.ac.uk (link opens site in new browser window).

How to apply for a Rhodes Scholarship

The selection of Rhodes Scholars is overseen by a National Secretary of the Rhodes Trust in each selecting country. For details of the selection process in your own country, including detailed eligibility criteria, and application form, follow the country links here.
